More info

Bakhtiari rugs are large rugs made by a tribe of that name living to the south of Mahallat, between Hamedan and Isfahan. They are predominantly died with vegetable colors, and are of regular quality. For those of poorer quality, Dabaghi is used rather than dry wool, removing its typical glossiness.

During the last twenty years there has been a revival of this industry, which may be attributed to the foresight of the wife of a tribal chief. She had realized that the tribe’s accommodations could be improved with the production of good rugs and did her utmost best to encourage the industry to do so. Some measures were subsequently taken, such as the copying of earlier carpets manufactured in the past. There are really only two sizes in Baktiari rugs: the Sedjadé and a larger size of about 6 feet 6 inches by 9 feet 9 inches.
